Last night I photographed a match between Djurgårdens IF and the Malmö Redhawks. I looked at the league table and the recent matches before the game and figured Djurgården would win with ease. So I decided to place myself on Djurgården’s attacking side, which would have give me Djurgården attacking my way in the third period and hopefully the possibility of catching some newspaper worthy pictures.
Unfortunately my predictions didn’t go the way I had figured. The first period ended 1-3 with the visitors leading and three goals having been scored on the opposite side of the rink. Then the second period ended with the visitors extending their lead to 1-4, at that point I thought it was going to be near impossibly for Djurgården to recover the game. I then made a calculated decision to switch sides for the last period. My thinking was that if Malmö scored another goal it would take all the wind out of Djurgården and it would be all said and done.
It didn’t work out like that.
At the start of the third period Djurgården reduced the score to 2-4. Malmö then scored an amazing goal, their number 10 was tripped by Djurgården player but still managed to score even though he was more or less in full flight. You can see a picture of him being tripped bellow. I had figured that might have wrapped it up, but again I was wrong. Djurgården’s Pontus Åberg scored to make it 3-5. There is picture of his shot going into the goal bellow. Then it was Petr Kalus, who made 4-5 and finally Erik Gustafsson who scored to make it 5-5.
Having ended 5-5 the game went on to sudden death and then penalties were Djurgården took the win. Go figure!
