Last night was a miserable night for Swedish teams hoping to participate in European football this fall. AIK, Göteborg, Elfsborg, and Brommapojkarna all squared of in Europa League qualification matches, and each of them came out bearing a loss.
I was at Friends Arena covering AIK against Kazakhstan’s FC Astana. The first match, played in Kazakhstan ended in a draw, but the thought of AIK losing never really crossed my mind. As I made my way to Friends I was already thinking about who AIK might meet in the next round and eventually in the group phase of Europa League.
Little did I know… 3-0 victory for the visitors and no European football in Stockholm this year. What a blow and right before the derby too.
