Part two of my post covering the 2016 Champions League Final. Make sure you check out 2016 Champions League Final (Part 1) with pictures from the first half.
Going into this game it was really hard for me to know what to expect. Real Madrid made a strong start, and looking back on things I think I probably expected it to go the other way. With Atletico closing Madrid down better. Sergio Ramos put Madrid ahead and I was well positioned for that picking off the entire sequence. You can see some stills from that in the previous post.
After the goal it seemed like the match went through periods with both teams having the better of one another. In the second half I had a lot of action on my side of the pitch. There was a penalty for Atletico. I decided to track the penalty taker, it never crossed my mind that he wouldn’t score. I now wish I had track Real’s keeper because Griezmann didn’t even really react to missing the penalty. Atletico would eventually find the equalizer through Yannick Carrasco. You can see him scoring beneath this text.
The second half also provided a good amount of theatrics from Pepe. On two separate occasions he simulated in an attempt to get Atletico players sent off. Referee Mark Clattenburg of England made it clear to Pepe he wasn’t falling for his antics. However he failed to take an action beyond that, which I feel was a mistake. A player blatantly cheating and behaving in such an un-sportsman manner should be sent off and taught a lesson.
With the game all square I had a pretty good feeling it would go to penalties. You are not allowed to move from your seat during the game, but in the case of penalties you can move to the side of the pitch where the penalties are going to be taken. Real Madrid won the coin toss, so all of us on Atletico’s side migrated to the other end of the pitch. I positioned myself near the corner flag on the left hand side of the goal. It was a great angle for penalty kicks.
Ronaldo was the final penalty kick taker and there was no doubt that he was going to score. Here I kind of regret my positioning. Ronaldo is right footed and obviously he was going to run to the left. Lesson learned.
