The Swedish football season is right around the corner. As an appetizer we were treated to a Swedish Cup derby match between Djurgårdens IF and Hammarby IF. Derby matches are my absolute favorite to photography. They are the few occasions that Stockholm teams really fill out their venues and the atmosphere is always world class.
This particular derby felt a little low key, like something was missing. Maybe it was because the Allsvenskan season hadn’t started yet. As the match got underway Djurgården took an early lead. So early that the smoke from all the flares hadn’t even cleared out yet. That early lead would not last long as Hammarby quickly tied, took control of the game, and then went on to take the lead.
To me it never felt like Djurgården was going to equalize. So at the half I moved over to Hammarby’s attacking side on the assumption they would score another. Which they did.
I have to say I was pretty impressed with Hammarby’s new forward, lexssander Medeiros de Azeredo. It was the first time I saw him, but I thought he had great movement and a real hunger for goal. I look forward to seeing what he can do as the season progresses.
With Hammarby’s victory they go forward in the Swedish Cup and will not play Stockholm’s other team AIK. So next week we get another derby match, this time at Friends Arena. Nice!
Thanks for stopping by!
