The best thing about being a sports photographer is that you are always covering new and exciting events. A year ago I got to try photographing figure skating for the first time when Stockholm hosted the European Figure Skating Championships. This year I got to try my hand at alpine skiing as Stockholm hosted the Audi FIS Ski World Cup.
The event consists of a parallel downhill slalom race with two athletes competing against one another. You start out with a round of 16 with 8 races. Then you move into the quarter finals, the semi finals, and finally the finals. The races go very quickly. It is more or less impossible to shot both athletes during the race. Luckily they do two runs so you can get one of them on the first run and the other one on the second.
I shot with a 400mm telephoto lens, and it worked out well. A 600mm lens, or even adding a converter to me 400mm lens would have really hit that sweet spot. However with a modern camera like the Canon 1D X the resolution is good enough that you can get by.
Thanks for stoping by!
