Today is the International Women’s Day and congratulations are in order to 16-year-old Greta Thunberg, who just today was announced as the 2019 Woman of the Year (Åretskvinna) in Sweden for her environmental and political activism. A well-deserved prize in my opinion.
The picture above of Greta is one that I took for The Guardian back at the end of August last year. This is when her school strike for climate (Skolstrejk För Klimatet) was just starting to garner media attention. From there it has just gotten bigger and bigger. Since taking these pictures I have had regular inquiries and requests for them. Which really shows how Greta’s strike has taken off and inspired so many around the world.
I actually photographed Greta again just yesterday. This was once again for a piece that will be released in The Guardian. So look out for that shortly. Next Friday, the 15th of March, there is a global school strike for climate change and naturally, Greta will be leading it here in Stockholm outside of the Swedish parliament house Riksdag. Probably a good idea to swing by and take some pictures.
